    • General Information

    • Galle is known as the famous Tarshish of the Bible where King Solomon obtained gems and spices. Galle is a “Living” UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the capital of the Southern Province. It is the port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka in 1505.  It was later captured and fortified by the Dutch who ruled the maritime area in Sri Lanka in the 17th and 18th centuries. The City still has an aura of old Holland. Within the well preserved 90 acre Galle Fort there are ramparts built in 1663 with old Dutch churches and monuments with armorial bearings along with an imposing crested and monogrammed gateway dated 1669. There are many well preserved ancient Dutch houses and narrow alleys which still have Dutch names. The New Oriental Hotel which was built for a Dutch governor in 1684 is a colonial gem which has now been converted to the internationally renowned Amangalle Hotel. There are several boutique hotels which indicate the importance of this location.
