    • General Information

    • Situated about 15 minutes from the Colombo International Airport on the west coast this beach town is known as “Little Rome” due to the profusion of Christian Churches. This conventional fishing village with its sandy beaches and safe sea bathing is now a thriving tourist town. The fish market in the town has become a busy trading area of fish with fresh prawn and crabs being sold each morning (except Sunday) when the fishing crafts return to the shore. The most picturesque sight in the town is the large sailed outrigger canoes. Negombo was a Portuguese and Dutch trading port. The old Dutch Fort built in 1672 which now serves as part of the prisons building is another attraction in the town. The Dutch Canal which served as a supply route during the Dutch Administration is also another landmark in the town.
