Lunuganga Estate, the country home of Geoffrey Bawa, the architect and writer is etched in the history of Sri Lanka. It is a country home situated in an extensive lakeside garden estate with an idyllic cottage along with a set of four suites for visitors. In the interior of the house there are statues, history and art and the exterior has symmetrical pavilions and an Italian Renaissance Garden seen nowhere else in Sri Lanka. Lunuganga Estate was his first muse and it also served as a model for his other architectural concepts. Throughout his life he experimented with new ideas till his final illness in 1998. On his demise, Lunuganga Gardens became a part of the Lunuganga Trust. At present, these gardens are open to the public and the buildings are used as a country house hotel.
