    • Kandy – a lovely exotic city Kandy, the beautiful mountainous city is situated in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country surrounded by breathtaking mountains. This UNESCO World Heritage city is Sri Lanka’s last kingdom. Kandy has a cooler climate due to its location and altitude. Kandy has a laid-back relaxed lifestyle and the main attraction in the city is the tranquil lake with an island in its middle. The city is the bastion of Buddhist faith and Buddhists from all over the world pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha enshrined in the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic popularly called Dalada Maligawa. Kandy is a cultural and spiritual city where history, culture, folklore and traditions have been well preserved from the past up to present. The satellite villages of Kandy are home to traditional handicraft industry – wood, brass, silver and lacquer work. Jewelry making in Sri Lanka is an ancient craft for generations. Exquisite silver and gold jewelry which were handcrafted for the Kandyan royals and aristocrats during the Kandyan Kingdom are still hand crafted in these villages. Craftsmen of Kandy have preserved original designs which were popular during the Kandyan Period. The city of Kandy comes alive during the month of August when the Esala Perahera, the most beautiful pageant in Sri Lanka is held. This pageant is significant as a religious festival as well as a festival connected with agriculture as it is held to invoke blessings of deities to seek rain for successful harvests. Highlight of the pageant is a replica of the casket of the Sacred Tooth Relic and placed on the magnificently decorated tusker of the Dalada Maligawa. Each section of the pageant is equally significant; whip crackers and lamp bearers represent thunder and lightning and drummers and dancers, the sound of rain. There are around 100 tuskers in the Pageant beautifully decorated in glittering costumes parading majestically. Situated about five kilometers from Kandy City, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is the largest and most impressive botanic garden in Sri Lanka. It has a collection of top quality orchids, an elegant avenue of royal palms, a giant fig-tree, extraordinary cannonball fruit tree, well-kept lawns, a fernery and many species of Burmese, Chinese and Japanese bamboo trees as well as well-maintained flower beds of cannas, hibiscus and bougainvillea. During the Kandyan Kingdom, Peradeniya Gardens was reserved exclusively for Kandyan royals. It was converted as a Botanical Garden in 1821 by the British.
