    • About This Activity

    • Handunugoda Tea Estate is situated about 30 minutes from Galle. It is also known as the closest tea plantation in the world to the sea. This tea factory is renowned for its ‘virgin white tea’. The plucking of ‘virgin’ white tea follows an ancient Chinese tradition lost in the sands of time for over 4000 years. According to legends, the Chinese Emperor employed virgins wearing soft silky gloves to cut the tea leaves with gold scissors into a golden bowl. The leaves were dried naturally with the help of the divine wind until they were ready to be stored. This tea was a drink exclusively served in the Imperial court and had been beneficial for health. Virgin White Tea is the rarest type of white tea which is untouched by humans from plucking to production till it reaches the lips of the consumer. This is a kind of tea rich with antioxidants and is passionately handcrafted for a unique tea experience.

During the tour, you will be accompanied by a resident tea planter in the factory. The owner of the tea plantation is Herman Gunaratne who accompanies visitors most of the time in the factory. During his absence, a fellow team member would take his place. During this important tea tour you can see how this unique white tea is plucked and processed followed a tea tasting session.. There is a shop where you can purchase white tea.
